Workplace problem? Mediation could help...

Disputes between individuals or groups generate an undesirable working environment, not just for the people involved, but also the wider team.

Left alone, such issues can lead to reduced morale, increased sickness absence, loss of productivity, poor customer service and potentially, litigation.

Faced with a situation that it’s looking hard to resolve – why not think about the role mediation might play? It’s cheaper than formal dispute routes, is less stressful and costly for all involved and is often a more effective way of moving forward.

It's suitable for a variety of issues, such as performance, attendance, personality clashes and employee grievances, as well as individual rights issues around matters like redundancy, dismissal and discrimination.

During the mediation process an independent person works with the people who are having the disagreement or problem. A mediator is impartial and so not there to decide who’s right or wrong, but to work with the parties to help them come to a positive solution for moving forward.

The process is both a confidential and voluntary for the parties involved. The process fully involves both parties and taking ownership of the problem means that it is their solution, not that of the mediator. The mediator’s job is to help develop a solution, not to give the answer.
