Here it is, the final issue of Smart Electrician Magazine in 2017. As ever, it is packed with content covering product innovations, technical guides and the latest developments in the electrotechnical industry.
We have several articles that reflect on the draft of the 18th Edition to BS7671 and consider the changes that could influence the way we use cables as well as the new minor works certificate.
We also have pieces that outline the business opportunities in smart security systems, smart thermostats and lighting control in offices.
A special feature this month is focused on apprenticeships. We have also collected stories and accounts from around the industry that demonstrate how apprenticeships have formed the foundation of many successful and diverse careers. With less young people being drawn towards apprenticeships, it is imperative that we display how an electrotechnical apprenticeship can provide a viable career path next to university and other forms of higher-education. If more schools and parents were aware of the opportunities in the construction and electrical industries, they would be less dismissive of trade apprenticeships as a second-class option.
As well as being the final issue of the year, we are sad to announce that we will no longer be publishing Smart Electrician in the future
This is only a small magazine but we are very proud of what we have achieved and of all the positive feedback we have received from our readers.
One of the saddest things about Smart Electrician ending its run is that there has never been a more interesting time to report on the electrical industry.
From a technology perspective, there are so many exciting new developments to track. Concepts like smart buildings, energy storage and building management systems are becoming even more prominent and it has been a pleasure to explore how they can be carved into new business opportunities for electrotechnical professionals.
Whilst there is a lot of potential opportunities in the future, the industry, as it exists now, faces a lot of challenges. Many are concerned about the ever-widening skills gap and there is still much to be done to ensure and maintain installer competency and product compliance.
With Smart Electrician, we decided to focus on the former, providing aspirational content that asked our readers to think beyond their current business and workload and seriously consider what their role can be in a rapidly changing industry. We have had fun wading into these topics and hope you have enjoyed reading our magazine as much as we have enjoyed publishing it,
It’s not all doom and gloom. Our team will be working closely with our partners at the Electrical Contractors' Association (ECA) to launch a brand-new publication in 2018. So, keep an eye out for our first issue early next year!
