Q & A of the Day – I’m fitting a VO unit – should a main isolator be fitted?

This Q & A is one of thousands posted in our Technical Expertise area, and answered on a daily basis by our Voltimum Experts.

Question: In the electrical installation I'm working on, the owner wants to save energy. As a result I'm aiming to fit a domestic voltage optimisation unit to reduce and regulate the incoming voltage. This should reduce wasted energy and help save money on electricity bills.

However, is there a requirement for a main isolator to be fitted when installing a voltage optimisation unit?

Answer: A suitable isolator must be installed between the installations meter and the Voltis Home voltage optimisation unit to comply with BS7671:2008 and its subsequent amendments.
