Chris Whitehead, Balfour Beatty's Global Head of Sustainability and Innovation, provides a glimpse into the world of 3D city models and the business opportunities that they present.
A decade ago, a citywide 3D model would have cost millions to construct. But computing power has become cheaper, and datasets and applications are now more compatible with each other.
This has suddenly made possible 3D models of a whole city that characterise its geological terrain, its road networks, building heights, building energy systems, the flight paths above them, the utilities and foundations below.
