Question: Will connection of a standby generator earth to the lightning protection system earth, satisfy the requirements of regulation 551.4.3.2.1 in BS 7671: 2008?

Answer: With regards to a standby generator, Regulation 551.4.3.2 refers to the need for an additional means of earthing, such as an earth electrode. The resistance of this earth electrode should generally not exceed 20ohms. (see BS 7430 - CoP for Earthing - soon to be updated).

For lightning protection, prior to connection to the earthing system, the advice of a competent person, who is conversant with BS EN 62305:2006, should be obtained.
