Our Voltimum Experts answer your questions on a daily basis in our Technical Expertise area. This Question of the Day concerns a domestic consumer unit and what to do with previously connected unknown circuits. It is answered by SELECT:
Do I reconnect and put LIM on the schedule of test results, and under remarks put 'untraced circuit'. Is that sufficient?
Answer: If the circuits in the consumer unit are unmarked, this should have been established prior to commencing work on changing the consumer unit.
In a domestic dwelling, it should be a relatively easy task to identify unknown circuits. When replacing a consumer unit, all circuits should be tested prior to reconnection.
It would be to your advantage to study the Electrical Safety Council's 'Best Practice Guide 6' on changing a consumer unit. Go to www.esc.org.uk and click on 'Business & Community', and then click on 'Best Practice Guides'.
