Q & A of the Day - What is a 'skilled' or 'instructed person'?

Question: Under the 17th Edition of the Wiring Regulations (BS7671), we can only fit sockets rated below 20A without an RCD if it is to be used by a 'skilled' or 'instructed persons'.

Can someone please advise how we determine what a 'skilled' or 'instructed person' is, and also how we ensure that a NON-skilled (ordinary) person does not use the socket?

Answer: Frequently asked questions (FAQs) regarding BS 7671:2008 have been discussed by a forum comprising a number of bodies, including SELECT, the ECA, the NICEIC Group, the Electrical Safety Council and the IET. The question you have asked is one of those answered by the forum and all can be accessed via www.esc.org.uk/forum

And Voltimum Managing Editor James Hunt says: Much more information on the 17th Edition is also in Voltimum's mini web portal www.wiring-regulations.co.uk
