Q & A of the Day – What are the regulations concerning gland tags?
Question: I have recently come across SWA gland earth tags that had been terminated using pop-rivets and self-tappers. Needless to say, the continuity on to the SWA was lost. Could you advise if and what regulations exist within BS7671 as far as the termination of a CPC, such as gland tags, with regard to ferrous or non-ferrous fixings and also the fixing type, ie: bolt and nut or other?

Answer: The requirements of Section 526 of BS 7671: 2008 apply. In particular, Regulations 526.1 requires connections to provide continuity and mechanical strength. Also, look at Regulation 526.2 regarding the means of connection. There are no specific requirements with regard to connections to earth tags on SWA glands.
