Q & A of the Day - What are the recommended periods between inspections?
Question: We are a very small engineering company and a 'monthly visual inspection' of electrical equipment has been requested as part of our HSE documentation. I can find nothing the Regulations that requires inspections of this frequency.

Can you enlighten me as to the actual recommended periods between inspections (both visual and electrical test) for stationary and portable equipment (including power tools etc)?

Answer: The Code of Practice for the In-service Inspection and Testing of Electrical Equipment gives recommendations on initial frequencies of inspection and testing. From Table 7.1, for Class One equipment within an office area, it provides the following guidelines:

  • Portable equipment = 24 months
  • Combined inspection and testing hand-held equipment = 12 months.
