This Voltimum UK user in Qatar asks about uprated power requirements for high-rise buildings there. His question – in this case – cannot be answered, for reasons given by SELECT (Theme - Power):
Question: In our project (in Doha-Qatar) we have an infastructure design for which I had long discussions regarding calculated / estimated power consumptions.
For office buildings 65VA/m² (includes district cooling load) and for underground car parking areas 25VA/m² are considered in accordance with the infrastructure design.
At the beginning, there was no detailed design for the each plot. Accordingly, it is an approximate calculation that is considered for the plots having the district cooling system, and it has been made using power consumption measurements (mean experience) for typical buildings in Abu Dhabi and the Gulf.
Now, plot developers and design consultants are asking 40% more power. They are asking in accordance their detailed design for the buildings.
I would like to know which criteria or load values (VA/m²) we should follow in accordance with BS or international standards? Is there any source available where we can see standards and/or advice?
Note that high rise buildings (commercial) are from 20 to 25 floors and may have basement car parks (three to six floors).
Answer: Sorry, but it is impossible to specify the appropriate allowances for diversity for every type installation, and such allowances call for special knowledge and experience.
No guidance is given for blocks of residential dwellings or commercial premises. Such installations should be assessed on a case by case basis.
