Q & A of the Day – What is the allowable distance between sink and distribution unit?
This Q & A is one of thousands posted in our Technical Expertise area, and answered on a daily basis by our Voltimum Experts.

Question: I have a metal-clad distribution unit and plan to install a sink unit 1.0m distance away. Is this in compliance with BS 7671:2008?

Answer: Assuming that the distribution board is installed in an accessible position and is installed correctly, it should be in compliance. See Regulation 528.3.

Is the metering equipment also in this vicinity?

There is also guidance in IET Guidance Note 1 that it is preferable that accessories should not be installed within 300mm of a stainless steel sink unit top - this however is simply a guide and is not always possible.
