Q & A of the Day - Is there legislation on wire suspensions for luminaires?
Question: Can you please advise as to whether there is any statutory regulation requiring the provision of independent wire suspensions (fixed to the building structure) to provide supplementary/additional support for 600 x 600mm recessed lay-in modular luminaires installed in a suspended T-grid ceiling?

Answer:
There is no statutory requirement however BS 7671:2008 (IEE Wiring Regulations 17th Edition - which is not statutory) Regulation 559.6.1.5 'Fixing of the luminaire' requires 'Adequate means to fix the luminaire shall be provided' and that 'the weight of the luminaires shall be compatible with the mechanical capability of the suspended ceiling.
