Question: We are planning to install socket-outlets for outdoor use at the roof level of seaside villas in our project.

What is the necessary IP rating of socket-outlets for outdoor use, according to BS7671: 2008, or other BS standards?

Answer: The IP rating of socket-outlets used outdoors depends upon the external influence to which the socket-outlets are being subject to.

Generally ratings of IP56 or IP66 would suffice for most instances.

See BS7671: 2008 - Regulations 132.5.1, 512.2.1 and also Appendix 5.
