Question: I have a residential building with typical flats units. Each unit has its own three-phase panel with lighting, sockets, cooker unit etc. The cooker's load is 6kW/phase. How should I balance the loads on the panels, for example, load balancing on connected loads? What about a typical balanced panel? Or should I take into the consideration the cooker and put it on different phase in each panel's flat. Note that the building has its own transformer substation.
Answer: Assuming that you have a three-phase distribution board at each unit (each unit containing a number of flats), then from the three-phase distribution board at each unit, single-phase supplies are run to each individual flat within the unit. You should, of course, ensure that the individual single-phase supplies are balanced equally across the three-phases.
