Q & A of the Day – How do I meet regulations with this Christmas tree lighting?
Question: Can you advise on the correct design for lighting running up a live Christmas tree, which will be permanent fixture?

It is intended to use 12V lights, ducted back to a 240V supply, which currently has BS88 20A fuse protecting a 13A socket. I take it from the regulations that it will need RCD protection and a transformer within a waterproof enclosure, but can you advise on what exactly I would need to do to make it regulation compliant?

Answer: The general recommendations for temporary decorative lighting systems that are within reach of the public is that they should be provided with a safety extra low voltage (SELV) supply.

Alternatively, if the lighting installation is out of reach of the public, it may be supplied at 230V with RCD protection.

Any external equipment used may suffer from external influences - such as corrosion, condensation and vandalism. The designer should take these into account when selecting the equipment (at least IP33 rated).
