Answer: Where cables are concealed in a wall at a depth of less than 50mm from the surface, not provided with adequate mechanical protection and the installation is not intended to be under the supervision of a skilled or instructed person 30mA RCD protection would be required for additional protection (BS 7671:2008 Regulation 522.6.7.)
Section 559 in BS 7671 contains requirements for lighting installations but does not contain a specific requirement for RCD protection. RCD protection may be required, however, in situations where the earth fault loop impedance is too high to provide the required disconnection time as per requirements contained in Chapter 41 Protection against electric shock.
