Q & A of the Day - Is electrical work classed as 'cold work' under a PTW?
Question: My company is in the process of introducing a new PTW system. The job description in the old type PTW included electrical work, and there was a designated box to tick when completing the permit.

However, the new PTW does not have a provision for electrical work in the job descriptions. When I queried this, our HSE department advised that electrical work will now fall under the remit of 'cold work'.

I find this hard to believe. I have never known electrical work to be covered by cold work on a permit to work. I would be interested to hear any views or advice relating to this matter.

Answer: I assume that the PTW you are describing is for general use? These are normally issued depending upon the various aspects of work that is covered and the related health and safety issues. These may well differ from company to company.

An electrical PTW must be issued for work on HV systems that are made dead - and also may be used for certain LV work.

Typical examples of this PTW are provided in HSG85 (Electricity at Work - Safe Working Practices). You should be able to download a copy of this via the HSE website at www.hse.gov.uk free of charge.
