Q & A of the Day - Does this new steel gas pipe need bonding?
Question: We have been asked to install a gas pipe arrangement as detailed on the supplied sketch (see the attached PDF document). The boiler has an electrical supply, but I don't think that there is any need, electrically, to bond the new steel gas pipe. Can you give me your thoughts?

Answer: Main protective bonding of incoming services is generally only required if there are extraneous-conductive-parts likely to introduce earth potential, such as where pipes etc. are buried in the ground.

Guidance on establishing whether a conductive part is an extraneous-conductive-part is provided in IEE Guidance Note 8: Earthing and Bonding.
