Q & A of the Day – Do re-wired old consumer units needed RCD upgrades?
Question: I have many job queries from customers wanting work carried out on existing circuits that are fed from old consumer units having re-wirable fuses. If I am to extend a ring to add sockets, do I also need to upgrade the consumer unit to include RCD protection under the 17th Edition?

Alternatively, can I just make it an observation on the certificate to avoid a few extra sockets costing £300?

Answer: This is a common question and the answer in line with the requirements of BS 7671 2008 (17th Edition) depends on the amount of work being carried out, the person using the equipment, and the type of building or location. Careful consideration will be required, as not every circuit will necessarily need RCD protection. Socket outlets, however, will normally need this added protection and this can be provided by introducing a separate RCD module out with the existing consumer unit, and diverting the wiring accordingly. The cost will, of course, have to be measured against the cost of a new unit.
