Q & A of the Day – Do I still need to run a separate 4mm cable?
Question: Using a 2.5mm twin & earth PVC ring, and sockets with two earth terminals, and the circuit protective conductor (CPC) terminated separately at each socket and the board, do I still need to run a separate 4mm? Looking at the 17th Edition Regulations (p133), 543.7.1.3, point (iii), paragraph two, this is unclear. As a rule, we install a separate 4mm, but looking at that got me thinking!

Answer: For a socket-outlet ring final circuit, Regulation 543.7.2.1 applies. 2.5/1.5mm cables meet the requirements, provided that they are separately terminated at the distribution board and sockets, as you have described.
