Q & A of the Day – Do I need in-bathroom bonding?
Question: If I provide circuit 30mA RCD protection at the consumer unit for fused-switched spurs and lighting in the bathroom, as well as confirming earth bonding at the consumer unit, do I comply with the 17th Edition? If I have no RCDs at the consumer unit, and use an RCD switched spur and RCD bathroom protected lighting circuit, do I need in-bathroom bonding?

Answer: In order to comply with BS7671: 2008, all circuits in a domestic bathroom need to have additional protection using a 30mA RCD. The normal way is to introduce the device(s) in the consumer unit. This can be achieved, however, in other ways, eg: RCD spurs etc.

If all circuits are covered with RCD protection, main bonding has been carried out, and earth fault loop results are acceptable for all bathroom circuits - then supplementary bonding may be omitted in the location.
