Q & A of the Day – Do I have to earth this old conduit?
Question: On a house re-wire, I found the original wiring to be in conduit (old VIR cable). This is very handy as it obviously saves a lot of chasing, in particular, to the switches. Can I treat the conduit as capping, or do I have to earth it?

Answer: The metal conduit - assuming that it is continuous - will, I imagine, be connected to the main earthing terminal (this can be verified by testing). If this is found not to be the case, then as an exposed conductive part it should be connected to earth. It is normal, but not essential, to install circuit protective conductors (CPCs) within the conduit.
