Q & A of the Day - Can I use meter tails for this installation?
Question: I have an existing electrical installation that has just had a new distributor's supply and meter installed. My query is that the new meter is external to the building and meter tails would have to be outside for approximately 1.5m, and inside for approximately 2m.

Can I use meter tails for this if I provide mechanical protection outside? Also, is the run too long, and would it require a sub-main?

Answer: Generally, distributors will only allow cable tails to be a maximum of 3m long. If the tails exceed this length, you will probably need to install a suitable isolation device for the consumer unit/distribution board.

Note: Meter tails would also need appropriate protection if are installed external to the meter box.
