Q & A of the Day – Can I run a separate supply to this machine socket-outlet?

This Q & A is one of thousands posted in our Technical Expertise area, and answered on a daily basis by our Voltimum Experts.

Question: I have a stainless steel bodied production machine that has its own supply and protection However, there are at present no spare ways on its own internal distribution board.

I've have been asked to look at mounting a double-gang socket-outlet onto the body of the machine. The socket-outlet will then be used to supply moveable equipment as and when required.

Can I run a separate supply (protected as normal) to this socket outlet, or do I need to have this socket fed from the internal machine distribution board in order to allow for full isolation in the event of an emergency?

Answer: It is permissible to supply the socket-outlet from a separate circuit, provided that one or more warning notices are fixed in accordance with Regulations 514.11.1 (Warning Notice Isolation) and 537.2.1.3.
