Q & A of the Day – Can floor reinforcing exert an impedance in lightning down conductors?
Question: I have a five story square shape in plan building with an atrium. The construction has reinforced concrete floors and I notice that the lightning down conductors are within the atrium. Is it possible that the reinforcing in the floors can exert an impedance within the down conductors, and that they should, ideally, be located outside the building?

Answer: This sounds like a foundation type earth electrode system (Type B Arrangement) where conductors are installed in the concrete foundation of the building. Please be aware that consultation with appropriate competent persons should be made prior to any work on any lightning protection system.

Reference should also be made to BS EN 62305:2006.
