Q & A of the Day – Why is this fluorescent lamp blackening at the ends?

This Q & A is one of thousands posted in our Technical Expertise area, and answered on a daily basis by our Voltimum Experts.

Question: I have installed new fluorescent lights in my sitting room. However, after just one day, they are blackening at the ends. What is causing this?

Answer: Blackening at the ends is associated with a rapid switching cycle but this can't be the case if it's a new lamp.

If it's blackening already it's a faulty cathode and the lamp(s) should be returned to the manufacturer.
