Q & A of the Day – Where to place surge protection in this installation?

Q & A of the Day – Where to place surge protection in this installation?
This Q & A is one of thousands posted in our Technical Expertise area, and answered on a daily basis by our Voltimum Experts.

Question: Which is the best location for surge protection? I have a main incoming distribution board, with localised circuits feeding 13A sockets, fluorescent lighting and AC. Also from this distribution board are two sub-main circuits to additional distribution boards - each rated at 120A - which will be feeding lighting, power and computers, plus three-phase outlets.

These additional two distribution boards will be located within 11m of the main distribution board, and will be in the same building, one on first floor above the main distribution board, and one in a separate room opposite the main distribution board on the ground floor.

Will it be OK to just fit one surge protection device at the main distribution board, or put additional surge protection units at the two other distribution board, so that there are three surge protection units?

Answer: In view of the relatively short distance between the sub-distribution boards from the main distribution board, we suggest that you only need to put surge protection on the main distribution board.
