Q & A of the Day – Should fire alarm cables always be red?
Question: We have been asked to install a fire alarm system for a client who has requested that the new system be wired in white rather than red FP200 cabling. I have looked through BS5839 and cannot see anything that would suggest that this may be a problem. Can you please advise whether this would be OK?

Answer: Please see paragraph 26.1 on page 69 of BS 5839-1:2002, where it states that in order to facilitate identification of fire alarm cables, it is preferable for cables to be coloured red. It does not stipulate that they must be red.
