Q & A of the Day – Should the certificate say that an installation complies with the 16th Edition?
Question: When periodic testing installations pre-17th Edition, should it be stated on the certificate that it complies with the 16th Edition, but NOT the 17th?

Answer: No. You should inspect to the 17th Edition, but there is no requirement for installation to comply with current requirements if it was completed prior to the 17th Edition.

You should, however, highlight under Recommendation Code 4 where the installation does not comply, e.g. no RCD protection for socket-outlets etc.

You may find the Electrical Safety Council's 'Best Practice Guide' (issue 2a) of use. Look under www.esc.org.uk
