Q & A of the Day – Is it okay to wire the TN-S system right up to a caravan socket in a caravan park?

Question: I was after some advice regarding the BS7671 Regulations concerning the requirements for a caravan park installation.

One of our Electricians is testing at the moment and wanted advice regarding Regulation 708.553.1.14 which refers to the requirements for the socket-outlets. The system is TN-S and I am finding Regulation 708.553.1.14 difficult to interpret as it refers to a TT system in its wording.

I know a PME system cannot be used for the final connection to caravan sockets, as Section 708 confirms, but I was confused as to if it is okay to wire the TN-S system right up to the caravan socket? Also, does the "socket-outlet" referred to in 708.553.1.14 mean any internal 13A sockets outlet, as well as the external Commando style socket?

Answer: Regulation 708.553.1.14 is only applicable where the system earthing is TN-C-S (PME) and therefore would not apply where the system earthing is TN-S.

The remainder of Regulation Group 708.55 applies to plugs and socket-outlets at the caravan pitches, not within the caravans themselves. Refer to Section 721 regarding socket-outlets within individual caravans.
