Q & A of the Day - Is it OK to run conservatory wiring within the dwarf walls?
This Q & A is one of thousands posted in our Technical Expertise area, and answered on a daily basis by our Voltimum Experts.

Question:We have been asked to install a ring main into a new conservatory, but other than using surface methods - i.e. trunking/conduit - the only way to run the cables is within the cavity area in the dwarf walls.

Is this acceptable and within BS7671 rules?

Answer: If the cable is installed during construction, then the cable must be adequately supported and sufficiently protected from moisture that could make the cable deteriorate.

If all provisions are in place, then this can be acceptable.

However, in an existing building with a cavity, it is not compliant to install in the cavity unless adequate support and detrimental influences are considered - and adequate provisions are in place for them.
