Our Voltimum Experts answer your questions on a daily basis in our Technical Expertise area. This Question of the Day, concerning electrical qualifications and what they allow, is answered by the ECA:

I have my 2330, 17th Edition etc, and I also have 2391. I'm 29 and looking to branch out on my own but am unsure of what work I'm allowed to do (obviously not HV work etc).
Also, does having the 2391 allow me to re-wire a house, test and then sign off the work - giving the customer the relevant electrical certificates he/she needs?
Do I have to belong to an organisation, such as the NICEIC?
Answer: Once you have qualified, you should obtain an ECS industry card with the HSE endorsement for CSCS. This would make it easier for you to work on commercial/retail sites.
If you are going to be working in the domestic sector, then you really should consider joining one of the Part P Registration schemes, so that you can notify your work as required by the Building
Regulations.
If you need any more information, call the ECA - we will try to help and advise you.
