Q & A of the Day – Are there 17th Edition amendments in the pipeline already?
Question: With BS 7671 2008 coming into effect in July, I have heard that it is also due to be amended in July. Are there any issues that the electrical industry should be made aware of? For example, one amendment that I have heard rumours about concerns the removed need for supplementary bonding in rooms containing a bath or shower, if it can be proved that the continuity of the exposed pipework - if disconnection times prescribed in section 411 are met. I've heard that, when BS 7671 is amended, it will require supplementary bonding in these areas.

If this is the case, should this type of amendment be published immediately to stop any installations that may be under construction, but not due for completion until after July, from giving rise to danger?

Answer: A corrigenda is being planned at the moment, the content of which has not yet been agreed. So far as we know, this is only to correct minor errors contained in the published Standard. The date for the first amendment has not yet been decided, but it likely to be at least a year away.
