Q & A of the Day – This wiring has out of date colours – is this unsatisfactory?
This Q & A is one of thousands posted in our Technical Expertise area, and answered on a daily basis by our Voltimum Experts.

Question: Where an installation has existing circuits wired in a colour code from a previous edition of BS7671, and has no warning label at the consumer unit to this effect, should the box for the inspection of item identification of conductors be marked unsatisfactory, or not applicable?

In other words, should installations be assessed to the current regulations, or to the regulations in force when the circuits were constructed?

Answer: Because there is no identification of conductors to the current regulations, then the outcome is a Code C3 'improvement recommended'. This indicates that the system is not to current standards - however, it does not make the installation unsafe.
