Q & A of the Day – Which code for a batten holder found in a domestic bathroom zone?

This Q & A is one of thousands posted in our Technical Expertise area, and answered on a daily basis by our Voltimum Experts.

Question: If, during carrying out a periodic condition report (now an Electrical Installation Condition Report (EICR) in a domestic property, a batten holder is found within the bathroom zones, which classification code should be used?

Answer: BS7671:2008 (Regulation 701.512.2) requires protection to IPX4.

The inspector should assess if there is any potential for danger and if in the opinion of the inspector there is the potential for danger, then to ensure that the installation is brought in to compliance, a Code C2 would advise 'Potentially Dangerous - Urgent Remedial Action Required'.

If no potential danger is present, a Code C3 is recommended. This advises: 'Improvement Recommended'.

The inspecting engineer should advise the client as appropriate for the particular property.
