Q & A of the Day – What should live music venue owners demand of visiting musicians in terms of their electrical equipment?

This Q & A is one of thousands posted in our Technical Expertise area, and answered on a daily basis by our Voltimum Experts.

Question: I look after the FIT and PAT testing for a live performance music venue, and have been asked what responsibility the venue has for musicians bringing their own amplification, lighting and cabling equipment in as part of performances.

The venue’s owners do not want to go further than necessary in laying down rules, but need to be sure they are satisfying their obligations under the Electricity at Work Regulations.

What should they be demanding of visiting players (if anything)?

Answer: We would recommend that your customer refers to the HSE Document GS50 for guidance on Electrical Safety at Places of Entertainment.

It can be found on the HSE website: http://www.hse.gov.uk/pubns/gs50.htm
