Published: 20 May 2013 Category: Q&A

Peter Metcalfe asks this question, which concerns whether the supply of electricity to electric gates needs Part P of the Building Regulations certification or not. It has been answered by the NICEIC (Theme – Regulations & Legislation):

Q & A of the Day – Under Part P, does power to electric gates need certificating?
This Q & A is one of thousands posted in our Technical Expertise area, and answered on a daily basis by our Voltimum Experts.

Question: If the electrical supply for electric gates was spurred from an existing interior garage circuit, and extended in SWA cable to the gate control box - under Part P, would this need to be certificated?

Answer: Part P extends to the supply of equipment in the outside location of domestic buildings. Any circuit in the garden or surrounding land would need special consideration in its method of installation because of external / environmental influences, such as rainwater.

Therefore, this work warrants Part P notification.
