Q & A of the Day – Is there a course aimed at the wiring side of solar PV only?
This Q & A is one of thousands posted in our Technical Expertise area, and answered on a daily basis by our Voltimum Experts.

Question: I'm an electrician registered with the NICEIC. I've been asked by some people about connecting solar PV panels, and I've been wondering what I needed to be able to do for this work. Note that it would only involve the wiring side, not installing the panels themselves.

I don't want to be paying for working at heights courses etc., as I will not be doing this side of the installation, so is there a course aimed just at the wiring side of solar PV and nothing else?

Answer: In order to install and connect solar PV systems, you need to become Microgeneration Certification Scheme (MCS) accredited as an installer.

You will, therefore, need to consider attending a solar PV course. Such courses are aimed at covering ALL of the aspects that an installer will need to be trained in order to install solar PV systems in a safe manner - taking into account both electrical and safety requirements.

The NICEIC offers such courses, as do many other providers.
