Q & A of the Day – Is it OK to amend an EICR to suit our individual needs?

Published: 5 March 2014 Category: Q&A

Chris asks this question, which is about whether a full Electrical Installation Condition Report (EICR) is needed for each of many fixed wiring circuits supplying a Motor Control Centre (MCC). It has been answered by the NICEIC (Theme – Regulations and Legislation):

Q & A of the Day – Is it OK to amend an EICR to suit our individual needs?
This Q & A is one of thousands posted in our Technical Expertise area, and answered on a daily basis by our Voltimum Experts.

Question: We’ve been requested to perform fixed wiring checks on circuits from a MCC supplying various pumps. There are literally hundreds of drives and to fill out a full EICR is very time consuming.

So is it OK to amend the EICR to suit our individual needs?

We want to do one test sheet for the main incoming supplies to the switch room, (from main incomer to busbars), then produce an inspection and test sheet for each circuit (panel isolator to motor), and delete any sections not required instead of writing N/A all the time.

With our test sheets as they are, we are re-doing the same information over and over again. Are there any test sheets targeted at MCC periodic testing available?

Answer: The format of an EICR should 'based' upon the model forms within appendix 6 of BS 7671.

Therefore, it is permissible to customise the condition report format to suit a particular set of circumstances, provided that the customised report adequately covers the scope of the installations for which it is intended so as to ensure that any immediate or potential sources of danger are included in the inspection.
