Q & A of the Day – Is a garden workshop supply and its wiring covered by Part P?

Question: Can you confirm whether a supply to a garden workshop and the wiring within is covered by Part P of the Building Regulations, or not?

I believe it is so, but I know a building inspector who says that only the supply cable to the workshop is covered by Part P, and that an owner may do as he likes inside the workshop.

Answer: Outbuildings and associated wiring to and within them are formally mentioned in the Part P document and, therefore, will require Part P notification to be carried out.

Such areas have been identified as special installations and are likely to have greater risks of electrical danger if not correctly and compliantly installed.
