Question: The current carry capacity of the ring main conductors should not be less than 20A (Regulation 433.1.5).

The current carrying capacity of the ring main reference method 101 is 17A. Appliances supplied from the ring main include washing machine, tumble dryer, fridge freezer, kettle, microwave, cooker hood, boiler and toaster etc.

If the building is a park home in a caravan park, which does not have to comply with Building Regulations, can this regulation be ignored on a ring main for a kitchen that has loft insulation exceeding 100mm?

Answer: Regulation 433.1.5 of BS 7671:2008 refers to the use of BS 1363 accessories when supplied through a ring final circuit. It describes the requirements for the circuit conductors for any such ring final circuit and makes reference to the requirements of Regulation 433.1.1 in determining the co-ordination between conductor and overload protection.

The regulations indicated above are not exclusive to installations notified under Part P of the Building Regulations and, therefore, would apply in the circumstances you describe.

It would appear from the information you have provided, that the ring final circuit in question would not comply with either of the regulations referred to above and an alternative solution should be found.
