Q & A of the Day – Is a BS 951 earth clamp OK for a TN-S system earth connection?

Question: Can you tell me the regulation that would deal with the connection to earth on a TN-S system. As I have been told that a BS 951 earth clamp is not suitable as it may crush the conductors of the supply cable?

Also would the BS 951 earth clamp be able to take the fault current.

Answer: A BS 951 earth clamp is not suitable for a cable and is not designed for that purpose. It may carry the fault current - however, that could pose further risks with it in place.

A Hepworth clamp or expanding earth clamp may be used instead. However, if this is the supplier's earth, then the local DNO should be approached to resolve the issue.
