Our Voltimum Experts answer your questions on a daily basis in our Technical Expertise area. This one, about how close a consumer unit has to be to the supply company's meter, is answered by MK Electric:
Question: Can someone clarify how close a consumer unit has to be to the supply company's meter? Is it possible to fit one some distance from the meter using correct wiring, fuses etc, or does the supply company take a dim view of this?
Answer: Consumer units should be installed within one meter of the supply energy meter. However, you may extend this to two meters without any dim views!
Installing a switch fuse rated to less than the main service cut out would enable you to install the consumer unit some distance from the main service.
