Richard Bolt
Richard joined dpa lighting consultants in 1996 at the age of 23, having graduated from The University of Sheffield, School of Architecture and Oxford Brookes University, Centre of Urban Design. Richard has worked on an enormous variety of lighting design projects throughout the world and has been an integral part of the Practices growth and development over the last decade and a half. Richard leads one of three teams within the Oxfordshire Office, where he has been based throughout his time at dpa.
Retail Lighting Design has become extremely important to the Practice and Richard has been involved with many projects over the years. Perhaps the most significant has been his involvement with the Swedish clothing retailer H&M, were he has lead the architectural lighting design of new landmark stores in Ginza, Harajuku, Shinjuku and Osaka (Japan) and Seoul, Singapore and Shanghai.
Richard draws inspiration from the natural world, when undertaking lighting design and is influenced by techniques such as shadowing, silhouetting, backlighting and uplighting. He believes that an all round project team effort is a necessity in order to deliver a quality lighting installation and that the ‘final setting up’ of a project is paramount to being able to fully realise the design concepts.
Overview of Richard's Presentation
H&M have been expanding their retail presence on prime high street locations worldwide, particularly in Asia, with innovative design applied to their flagship stores. We look at how dpa lighting consultants have integrated creative solutions within the Universal Design Studios (UDS) concepts and the way in which the resultant architectural lighting design has contributed to the image, impact and success of the brand.
