An introduction to DALI?

The Digital Addressable Lighting Interface (DALI) is a lighting specific protocol set out in the technical standard IEC 60929, Annex E. DALI, which was the idea of leading international lighting manufacturers, is fast becoming an international, standardised interface and its use provides real advances in lighting.

Moreover, though DALI is specific to lighting, when incorporated into building management systems (BMS), significantly enhanced building automation can be the result. It is particularly effective where remote supervising and service reports are required.

DALI was originally developed to provide a standard lighting control protocol. This was because many lighting control manufacturers used their own proprietary protocols - many 'open' but others not. Most of the major European manufacturers have now recognised the advantages and have joined the DALI activity group.
