Hazardous area scheme by NICEIC

01-July-03 - The NICEIC has been developing a new scheme which offers an extension to enrolment for all Approved Contractors undertaking electrical work in hazardous areas:

The piloting of the NICEIC Hazardous Areas Scheme has now been successfully concluded, with a number of Approved Contractors having been assessed against the hazardous area requirements. Approved Contractors who successfully complete the assessment process are being issued with a certificate confirming an extension to the scope of their enrolment for the range of hazardous area work assessed.

Hazardous Areas locations include:

  • Oil refineries.
  • Large chemical process plants.
  • Petrol station forecourts.
  • Petroleum/gas pumping stations.
  • Fuel storage depots.
  • Fuel distribution points.
  • Paint spraying equipment areas.
  • Flour, coal, sugar milling areas.

With the piloting of the new scheme now completed, the NICEIC will be concentrating its efforts of promoting the benefits to specifiers, users, licensing authorities and others with an interest in or responsibility for, electrical safety in hazardous areas, as well as to Approved Contractors.

In addition to the benefits already enjoyed by all Approved Contractors, an extension to enrolment for hazardous area work provides:

  • An indication to potential clients that the business has been independently assessed as complying with the industry standards applicable to electrical work in potentially explosive atmospheres.
  • Access to contracts for electrical work in hazardous areas from industrial, commercial and public sector organisations that choose to employ electrical contractors with recognised hazardous area capabilities.
  • An assurance to potential clients that electrical installation work in hazardous areas is covered by the NICEIC Complaints Procedure and Guarantee of Standards Scheme.
  • Highlighting of assessed hazardous area capability in the Roll of Approved Contractors, which is widely used by specifiers to select contractors for electrical work.
