The Electro-Technical Council of Ireland warns about the use of expanded polystyrene beads for thermal insulation of attics and similar areas:
When expanded polystyrene comes in contact with PVC cable, it has the potential to cause material degradation of the PVC insulation which could result in the wiring becoming unsafe. If this situation occurs there is an increased risk of fire or electric shock. Many householders may not be aware of this potential hazard.
The Electro-Technical Council of Ireland recommends that installers and suppliers of this type of thermal installation should:
- Ensure that expanded polystyrene insulation is kept clear of electric wiring, particularly in attics.
- Warn the householder of the potential danger when using expanded polystyrene.
- Include a suitable warning notice when this insulating material is supplied.
Note other types of insulation, e.g. placed directly on electric cables, may cause overheating of the cables concerned. Suitable warning labels should be applied to these insulating products to advise householders of the potential risk.
