Question: In BS EN 1838:2013 and BS 5266-1:2011, where risk assessments are mentioned, does this always mean the ‘Fire Risk Assessment’?
Answer: No! Where risk assessments are mentioned, it must be taken in the context of the specification section or document being read. There are many types of risk assessments that need to be carried out, starting from the initial pre-design stages, to the design, installation, maintenance stages etc.
Emergency lighting would normally fall within the fire risk assessment for a building or project to assess the specification and type of emergency lighting required, but the installation process for the same may be subject to other Health and Safety risk assessments for the on-site installation of the emergency lighting system.
