Question: I have been asked by my employer to wire a newly refurbished factory unit and offices, with canteen, washrooms etc, from scratch. I have no formal qualifications in this field although I have done some of this type of work before.

Am I permitted to carry this type of work out without contravening any existing regulations?

Answer: My answer is 'NO'. Before commencing any such electrical work, I suggest that you and your employer should read the HSE Electricity at Work Regulations and satisfy yourself that you and your employer are both in compliance with the law.

I also suggest that you should also read and understand BS 7671: 2008, the IEE Wiring Regulations - 17th Edition.
