Our Voltimum Experts answer your questions on a daily basis in our Technical Expertise area. This Question of the Day, concerning natural gas detector/shut-off valve installations, is answered by the ECA:
Looking at the 17th Edition of the Wiring Regulations, Chapter 56, we believe that the systems we are installing are classed as Safety Services. We don't, however, believe that 560.5 or 560.6 relate to our system simply because, if there is a power outage, the gas shut-off valve fails safe - i.e. isolates the gas supply and is not expected to continue operating under fire conditions. So what exactly is it?
I have really been struggling to obtain any clarification on this problem and would be very grateful for some advice, or being pointed in the right direction.
Answer: In your particular case, I would agree that 560.5 and 560.6 do not apply, as you do accept that the gas supply will be shut off upon isolation or lost of power supply.
